A pressure washer that loses pressure halfway through a fleet wash, refuses to fire on a cold morning or starts leaking from the pump is not a minor inconvenience. It stops work. This guide to pressure washer servicing is for businesses that rely on their equipment to earn its keep, whether that means cleaning plant, agricultural machinery, food areas, vehicles or hard surfaces.
The aim is not simply to keep a machine looking tidy. Proper servicing protects the pump, engine or motor, burner system and safety components that determine whether a washer remains dependable or becomes an expensive source of downtime.
What pressure washer servicing should cover
A commercial pressure washer works in a hard environment. Water quality, long operating hours, chemical use, vibration and frost all take their toll. A service should therefore be more than changing oil and checking that the machine starts.
On a cold water machine, the main focus is usually the water inlet, filters, pump oil, seals, unloader valve, hose, trigger gun and nozzle. Petrol and diesel machines also need engine checks, including oil, air filtration, fuel condition, spark plug or fuel system inspection where appropriate.
Hot water pressure washers need more attention because the heating system adds further components that can fail or lose efficiency. A competent service should assess the boiler, fuel filter, burner nozzle, ignition, fan, thermostat, safety devices and condition of the heating coil. If a hot washer is smoking, struggling to reach temperature or using more fuel than usual, leaving it until the next planned service can cost far more than addressing the fault early.
Static systems, van packs and high-use industrial machines may also have electrical controls, water tanks, filtration stages or remote operation equipment to inspect. The correct service plan depends on the machine and its job, not a generic annual checklist.
Daily checks prevent most avoidable faults
Operators should carry out a short check before starting work. This is particularly worthwhile for mobile teams, where a small issue found in the yard is far easier to resolve than one found on a customer site.
Check that the water supply is clean and adequate, that the inlet filter is free from debris, and that hoses have no cuts, bulges or damaged fittings. Look over the trigger gun and lance for leaks, make sure the nozzle is clear, and confirm that the machine is not running with an obvious oil or fuel leak.
Never run a pressure washer dry. The pump depends on water for cooling and lubrication. Even a brief dry run can damage seals and valves, particularly on a machine that is already warm. Likewise, do not leave the trigger closed for long periods while the machine is running unless its bypass arrangement is designed for it. Recirculating water heats quickly and can damage pump components.
For hot water units, pay attention to the flame, exhaust and operating temperature. Excess smoke, a strong fuel smell, repeated burner lockout or a boiler that cycles irregularly all warrant investigation. These are not faults to work around when staff, customers and site safety are involved.
A practical pressure washer servicing schedule
Service intervals should reflect hours worked, not just the calendar. A machine used for two hours a week in a sheltered workshop has very different needs from a van-mounted washer working six days a week through winter.
As a working guide, clean the inlet filter and inspect hoses, fittings and nozzles daily or weekly depending on use. Check pump oil levels regularly and change pump oil in line with the machine manufacturer's schedule. Engines require their own oil and filter intervals, often based on running hours. Hot water machines should have the burner system inspected regularly, especially where fuel quality, dust or long operating periods are factors.
For many commercial users, a professional service every six to 12 months is sensible. High-use equipment may need servicing more frequently. If the machine is part of a critical operation, such as a transport wash bay, food production area or contract cleaning fleet, planned maintenance is usually cheaper than waiting for a breakdown.
Keep a simple service record with the date, running hours, work completed, replacement parts and faults reported by operators. That record helps identify repeat issues, supports sensible replacement decisions and gives the engineer a clearer picture when a problem develops.
The parts that cause the most trouble
Nozzles are small, inexpensive and often overlooked. As a nozzle wears, its opening becomes larger. Pressure falls, water consumption rises and cleaning performance suffers. Operators may compensate by moving closer to the surface or holding the trigger longer, which slows the job and can damage paintwork or finishes. Replacing a worn nozzle can restore performance more effectively than adjusting the unloader to chase pressure.
Inlet filters are another common culprit. A restricted filter starves the pump of water, causing pulsing pressure, cavitation and premature wear. If your water source is drawn from a tank, bowser or agricultural supply, filtration deserves particular attention.
Pump seals and valves wear naturally over time, but poor water supply and frost damage accelerate the process. Milky pump oil can indicate water contamination. A steady drip from the pump may be a seal issue, while erratic pressure can point to worn valves, air ingress or an unloader fault. These symptoms need diagnosis, not guesswork.
Hoses and trigger guns are safety-critical. A damaged high-pressure hose can fail violently, while a trigger gun that sticks or leaks creates a real risk for the operator. Replace suspect components rather than taping, clamping or improvising a repair.
Hot water machines need specialist attention
A hot water washer delivers faster cleaning where grease, oil, traffic film or heavy soiling are involved, but it is not simply a cold machine with a heater attached. The boiler system needs correct combustion, clean fuel delivery and functioning temperature controls.
Scale inside the heating coil reduces heat transfer and increases fuel use. This is more likely in hard-water areas or where a machine is regularly fed untreated water. Descaling may be required, but it must be carried out correctly to avoid damaging the coil and associated components.
Burner nozzles, fuel filters and electrodes also require inspection. A machine that fires but produces dirty exhaust, bangs on ignition or regularly locks out should be taken out of service until the cause is found. Repeatedly resetting a burner without correcting the fault risks a larger repair and creates unnecessary safety concerns.
Winter servicing is not optional
Frost is one of the quickest ways to destroy a pressure washer pump, coil or pipework. Draining a machine is not always enough because water can remain in valves, hoses and internal passages. Use a suitable pump protector or antifreeze procedure specified for the machine, particularly for van-mounted and mobile equipment stored outside.
Before winter, inspect batteries, fuel lines, hoses and electrical connections as well. Diesel fuel can suffer from contamination and water ingress, while petrol left for long periods can deteriorate. If equipment will be unused, follow the manufacturer's storage procedure rather than leaving it parked until spring.
When to call a pressure washer service engineer
Routine checks can be handled by a trained operator, but some faults need specialist equipment and experience. Call for support if pressure is pulsing or falling despite a clean filter and correct nozzle, if the pump is noisy, if oil is contaminated, or if there is a persistent leak from the pump or unloader.
For hot water equipment, burner faults, electrical issues, fuel leaks, poor combustion and boiler problems should be handled by a competent service engineer. The same applies to major engine faults, damaged high-pressure components and any safety device that is not operating correctly.
A proper engineer will not just replace the first part that looks suspect. They will check water flow, operating pressure, bypass behaviour, electrical supply, fuel delivery and the wider condition of the machine. That approach reduces repeat call-outs and prevents good parts being replaced unnecessarily.
Make servicing part of the buying decision
The cheapest pressure washer is rarely the lowest-cost machine to own. Before buying, consider access to parts, realistic service intervals, local repair support and whether the specification suits the work. An undersized machine pushed beyond its intended duty cycle will cost more in repairs than a correctly specified unit.
