Hot Or Cold? The Pressure Washer Question That Decides How Fast Grease Dies

Watch someone wash a greasy workshop floor with a cold pressure washer, and you are watching a negotiation. The grease moves, spreads, thins, and regroups two metres to the left. An hour later, the floor is damper, and the grease has been redistributed rather than removed.

Now watch the same floor meet 80-degree water. The grease does not negotiate. It liquefies and leaves.

That is the entire hot-versus-cold question in one image. Yet, it is the decision businesses most often get wrong in both directions: cold machines bought for fundamentally hot jobs, and hot machines bought, at real expense, for work cold water handles happily. After four decades of selling and servicing both from our Leighton Buzzard workshop, here is the honest map.

What Heat Actually Does (The Kitchen Sink Principle)

Everyone already understands this technology at the kitchen sink: nobody washes a roasting tin in cold water. Fat and grease have melting points; below them, water and even detergent merely push the soil around, and above them, it releases and emulsifies.

A hot water pressure washer is that principle industrialised: a burner, usually diesel- or kerosene-fired, drives a boiler coil that lifts water to typically 60 to 90 degrees at the nozzle, with steam stages on some machines beyond that. Three things change immediately.

Grease, fat, and oil stop being opponents. Animal fats in food areas, lubricants and fuel films in workshops and yards, road grime's oily binder on vehicles: heat takes them apart at the molecular level while cold water only rearranges them.

Time halves, roughly. On oily and organic soiling, hot wash routinely finishes in half the time of cold, sometimes better. Since labour is the dominant cost of any cleaning operation, this is where hot machines quietly pay for themselves.

Chemical use falls. Heat does work that detergent would otherwise have to do, so dosing drops, which matters for cost, for rinse-off, and for anywhere chemical residues are unwelcome. Where chemicals are still needed, and we stock and advise on commercial detergents for exactly this, heat makes them work harder at lower strength.

There is a fourth effect worth naming for the hygiene industries: hot washing contributes to sanitation in a way cold cannot, softening biofilm and supporting the disinfection step in food-safe cleaning regimes.

Who Genuinely Needs Hot (The Shortlist)

Decades of installs later, the hot water customer list writes itself, and it maps almost perfectly onto the industries we serve most.

Food production and catering: fat is the enemy, audits are the referee, and hot wash plus food-safe chemistry is the standard answer. Transport and haulage: fifth wheels, chassis, engine bays, tankers, and fleet livery under oily film; hot machines dominate every serious truck wash. The honest cold-water list is just as clear: patios, render, cladding, algae, mud, brick, general yard dirt, and most car valeting, where cold water, proper technique, and the right chemistry do excellent work, as our valeting guide explains. The borderline cases- builders, councils, facilities teams- usually resolve by counting: if greasy jobs are occasional, hire heat or subcontract them; if they are weekly, the burner earns its keep.

Owning A Hot Machine: Costs And Care, Honestly

Hot machines cost more to buy, more to run, and more to service, and on the right work they are still the cheaper option. The arithmetic deserves daylight.

Running: burner fuel, typically diesel or kerosene, by the hour, on top of electricity and water. Against it: half the labour hours and less chemical per job. On genuinely greasy work, cost per finished job falls; on cold-appropriate work, you are burning diesel for nothing, which is the wrong-direction mistake.

Servicing: coils scale, especially in this region's hard water; burners need combustion checks, sensors and controls age. Installation and training matter more with heat.
