No Pressure, Pulsing, Or Dead On The Trigger: Pressure Washer Faults You Can Check Yourself

Every pressure washer fault call our Leighton Buzzard workshop takes begins the same way: "it was fine last time I used it." And a good third of those calls end without a repair, because the fault was a kinked hose, a blocked filter, a worn nozzle, or stale petrol- things the owner could have found in ten minutes with a cup of tea and a method.

This is that method. Four decades of workshop tickets, condensed into the checks that are safe to do yourself, in the order that finds faults fastest, plus the bright red lines where DIY should stop and the phone should come out.

One rule before anything: unplug electric machines and release trigger pressure before touching anything. Squeeze the trigger with the machine off to dump stored pressure. Water at 130 bar does not care that you were only having a look.

First Suspects: The Water Path (Most Faults Live Here)

Pressure washers are simple creatures: water in, pressure on, water out. Most "broken" machines have a problem at one of those three doors, and the checks cost nothing.

Water in. The machine can only pressurise what it receives. Check the tap is fully on, the supply hose has no kinks or crushed sections, and the flow actually matches the machine's appetite (fill a bucket: a typical machine wants a 10-litre bucket filled in under a minute from the supply). Then find the inlet filter, the little gauze where the hose meets the machine, and rinse it: it silts up quietly for years, and then one day it is the whole problem.

Air in the system is the great impostor: it presents as violent pulsing and surging that feels like a dying pump. Purge it: connect the water, and run the machine briefly with the trigger held open and the nozzle removed until water flows smooth and bubble-free. Air sneaks in through loose inlet connections and perished O-rings, so check both.

Water out. The nozzle is the most wear-prone part on the entire machine and the most common cause of both pressure loss (worn oversize, so pressure never builds) and pressure spikes with poor pattern (partially blocked). Clear blockages with the needle tool or a pin, from the front; water disconnected. If the machine is years old on its original nozzle, replace it: a few pounds, and machines come back to life on our counter weekly with nothing more.

Detergent systems earn a footnote: if chemical will not draw, the pickup filter or the injector is blocked, or the machine is on the wrong nozzle setting, since most inject only at low pressure. Our chemicals counter answers more of these calls than the workshop does.

Motor And Engine: Dead, Tripping, Or Sulking

Electric machines that do nothing: check socket, RCD, and fuse first, obviously, and then the less obvious classic: the extension lead. Long or thin leads starve these motors, tripping thermal overloads and, over time, genuinely damaging them. Run the shortest, heaviest-gauge lead you can, or plug in direct. A machine that cuts out after warm minutes and revives after cooling is describing an overload, and the lead is guilty until proven innocent.

Petrol engines that will not start after winter have stale fuel until proven otherwise: modern petrol sours in months, gumming carburettors. Drain, refill with fresh water, and try again before anything else. Then the standard doorstep checks: fuel tap on, choke set, plug lead seated, and oil level, because low-oil cut-offs silently prevent starting on many engines and the "broken" machine just wants 200ml of oil. An engine that starts, then dies when the trigger is squeezed, is usually telling a pressure story, not an engine one, and that means unloader valve, and that means us.

The Red Lines: Where DIY Stops

Some doors on a pressure washer should only open in a workshop, for reasons of safety, warranty, and not turning a £90 repair into a £400 one.

  1. The pump internals and unloader valve. Persistent pulsing after the air purge, pressure that will not build with a new nozzle, and machines that surge off the trigger point here, and this assembly punishes improvisation. Seals, valves, and unloaders are routine work on our bench and delicate work on a driveway.

  2. Anything electrical past the plug. Water and mains electricity share this machine; respect the housing.

  3. The burner and boiler on hot water machines. Fuel, flame, and pressurised hot water: engineer-only, always, as our hot water guide explains at length.

  4. The pump body after frost. Water weeping from the pump casing after a cold snap usually means a cracked head, the classic frost death our winter care guide exists to prevent. Nothing on a driveway fixes it; sometimes nothing in a workshop does either, which is why prevention gets its own article.

When you do ring, symptoms beat adjectives: "pulses at idle, smooths off under trigger, worse when cold" gets a faster, cheaper diagnosis than "it's not right." Photographs and videos help; our engineers frequently solve the simple ones by phone, which costs you nothing at all.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pressure Washer Faults

Why is my pressure washer pulsing?

Air or starved water supply first: purge trigger-open without the nozzle, clean the inlet filter, check flow. Persistent pulsing means unloader or seals, which is workshop work.

Why is there no pressure at all?

Nozzle first, worn or blocked, then supply flow and filters. If a new nozzle and full flow change nothing, the pump internals are asking for an engineer.

Why does my electric machine keep cutting out?

Thermal overload, almost always fed by a long thin extension lead or long off-trigger running. Shortest heavy lead possible, and let it cool before restart.

Why won't my petrol machine start after winter?

Stale fuel, then oil level (cut-offs block starting), tap, choke, and plug. Fresh petrol resurrects a remarkable share of spring "failures".

When should I stop and call?

At the pump internals, unloader, mains electrics, hot water burners, or any post-frost leak from the pump body. Those doors open in workshops.

Ten Minutes Before You Panic

Filter, flow, air purge, nozzle, lead, fuel: that sequence resolves a third of the "dead" machines we hear about before a van rolls or a bag is packed. Run it with the kettle on, and if the machine still sulks, you will at least ring us knowing exactly what it is doing, which is halfway to fixed.
