Pressure Washer Maintenance Checklist

How Often Should You Service Your Pressure Washer? A Maintenance Checklist

A pressure washer is a serious piece of equipment, and like any working machine, it rewards a little care and punishes neglect. The good news is that most breakdowns we see in our workshop are entirely preventable. Stick to a simple maintenance routine, and your machine will run reliably for years rather than letting you down at the worst possible moment.

Here is how often to service your pressure washer and exactly what to check.

The short answer

  • Daily checks — a two-minute routine every day the machine is used.
  • Weekly checks — a slightly closer look once a week for regular users.
  • Professional service — at least once a year, or more often for heavy commercial use.

For a machine running several hours a day, an annual professional service is the bare minimum. Light, occasional users can stretch to once a year comfortably.

Daily checks (every time you use it)

Before you pull the trigger, take two minutes:

  • Water supply — make sure the inlet filter is clean and the water supply is adequate. Starving the pump of water is the single fastest way to destroy it.
  • Hoses and connections — check for leaks, kinks or splits. A worn hose under pressure is a safety risk.
  • Lance and nozzle — look for blockages or wear. A worn nozzle quietly ruins your cleaning performance and wastes water.
  • Trigger gun — confirm it operates smoothly and shuts off cleanly.

On petrol machines, also check the engine oil and fuel before starting.

Weekly checks (for regular users)

Once a week, go a little deeper:

  • Clean the inlet filter — rinse out any grit and debris. This protects the pump from premature wear.
  • Inspect seals and fittings — look for early signs of leaks around connections.
  • Check the detergent system — make sure injectors and lines are clear, especially if you use thicker chemicals like snow foam.
  • Flush after harsh chemicals — if you have been using traffic film remover or strong degreasers, run clean water through the system to prevent corrosion.

After every use

Two habits will dramatically extend the life of your machine:

  1. Release the pressure — squeeze the trigger after switching off to relieve residual pressure in the system.
  2. Store it properly — keep it somewhere dry and, in winter, protected from frost. Freezing water inside the pump is a common and expensive cause of failure.

Annual professional service

Even a well-maintained machine benefits from an expert eye once a year. A professional service typically includes:

  • Pump inspection and seal replacement where needed
  • Checking and replacing worn valves
  • Testing pressure and flow against specification
  • Descaling, where hard water has caused build-up
  • Engine service on petrol models (oil, filters, spark plug)
  • A full safety check of hoses, fittings and the trigger gun

This is where small problems get caught before they become big, costly ones. A seal that costs little to replace today can wreck a pump if ignored.

The warning signs you should not ignore

Book a service sooner rather than later if you notice:

  • Pulsing or fluctuating pressure — often a sign of worn valves or a failing seal.
  • Loss of pressure — could be a blocked nozzle, a worn pump or a supply issue.
  • Leaks from the pump head — usually worn seals that will worsen.
  • Unusual noises — never normal, and worth investigating early.

Catching these early is almost always cheaper than waiting for a full breakdown mid-job.

Why servicing pays for itself

A pressure washer that fails on a busy day costs you far more than the repair bill — it costs you lost work and missed deadlines. Regular maintenance keeps your machine cleaning at full performance, extends its working life and protects the investment you have made. It is one of the simplest, highest-return habits in any cleaning operation.
