A pressure washer rarely fails at a convenient time. It fails halfway through a fleet wash, before a food-area clean-down, or when a contractor has a job booked and no spare machine. This pressure washer maintenance schedule guide is built for commercial users who need equipment to start, perform and keep earning - not sit in a workshop waiting for parts.

The right schedule depends on the machine, its workload and the water it uses. A cold-water electric machine used twice a week needs a different approach from a diesel hot-water washer running all day on an agricultural site. But the principle is the same: small, regular checks prevent expensive pump, engine and burner failures.

Start with the conditions your machine works in

Maintenance intervals should be based on operating hours as well as calendar time. A washer used for 20 hours a week can clock up a year's worth of domestic-style use in little more than a month. Keep an hour log for each machine, particularly shared workshop, depot and hire equipment.

Water quality also matters. Hard water causes scale inside hot-water coils, reducing heating performance and eventually restricting flow. Dirty borehole or tank-fed water can block inlet filters, wear valves and damage pumps if filtration is poor. Machines used near the coast, in food production or around corrosive chemicals need more frequent external cleaning and inspections.

Use manufacturer instructions for your exact model as the final authority. The schedule below is a practical working baseline for professional pressure washers, including cold-water, hot-water, petrol and diesel machines.

Daily pressure washer maintenance checks

A daily inspection takes only a few minutes and is the best protection against avoidable downtime. Complete it before the first job, not once the machine is already under load.

Check the water supply first. Make sure the inlet hose is not crushed, leaking or drawing air, and that the tap or tank has adequate flow for the machine. Running a pressure washer starved of water is one of the fastest ways to damage a pump. Inspect and rinse the inlet filter if it contains visible debris.

Look over the high-pressure hose, trigger gun, lance and couplings. A worn hose cover, damaged coupling or stiff trigger is not just an inconvenience. Under pressure, it is a safety issue. Replace damaged hoses rather than taping them up or hoping they last another shift.

Run the machine briefly and listen. Changes in pump noise, pulsing at the gun, vibration, a weak jet or water leaking from the pump area all need attention. For hot-water machines, confirm that the burner lights cleanly and produces consistent heat. White smoke, fuel smells, delayed ignition or repeated lockouts are warning signs, not quirks to work around.

At the end of the day, release pressure from the system, switch off correctly and store the machine away from frost. If there is any risk of freezing, do not leave water in the pump, hose or coil. Frost damage can split components that were perfectly serviceable the day before.

Weekly checks for hard-working equipment

Weekly maintenance is where a quick visual check becomes proper preventive care. Clean the machine exterior and remove mud, chemical residue and oil around the engine, pump and burner. A clean machine makes leaks easier to spot and helps cooling systems do their job.

Check engine oil on petrol and diesel units, following the engine manufacturer's recommended level and oil grade. Do not overfill. On machines with a separate pump oil reservoir, inspect the oil level and condition. Milky pump oil can indicate water ingress and requires investigation before the pump suffers further damage.

Inspect nozzles closely. A worn nozzle increases flow and lowers pressure, which makes operators believe the pump is weak. It can also overload the motor or engine because the machine is working outside its intended specification. Keep a known-good nozzle available for comparison, especially where cleaning performance is critical.

For hot-water pressure washers, inspect fuel lines and connections for leaks, check the fuel level and drain any visible water from a fuel-water separator where fitted. Use clean fuel from suitable storage. Contaminated diesel is a common cause of burner faults and blocked filters.

Monthly pressure washer maintenance schedule

Each month, or roughly every 50 operating hours on regularly used machines, give the washer a more thorough check. This is a sensible point to record pressure and flow performance if you have the correct test equipment. A gradual fall in either figure can identify nozzle wear, blocked filters, unloader problems or pump wear before a full failure.

Clean or replace water filters as required. If your machine is supplied from a tank, bowser or non-mains source, consider additional filtration and check it more often. A blocked filter reduces supply to the pump; a missing or damaged filter allows abrasive debris straight through it.

Inspect electrical cables, plugs and controls on electric machines. Pay particular attention to cable entry points and strain relief. For battery-powered or fully electric equipment, check charge leads, connectors and battery condition in line with the supplier's guidance. Only competent personnel should open electrical panels or attempt electrical repairs.

Check fasteners, anti-vibration mounts, wheels and chassis components. Mobile machines spend their working life being moved over kerbs, ramps and uneven yards. A loose guard or mount can become a larger repair if it is left until the next service.

If detergent is drawn through the machine, flush the chemical system with clean water after use and check the dosing hose and filter. Strong traffic film removers, hypochlorite and other chemicals can harden seals, corrode fittings and block injectors when left in the system. Use chemicals at the correct dilution and only through equipment rated for them.

Service intervals: every 3, 6 and 12 months

A planned service should be scheduled by hours and application, not simply because the calendar says so. For many commercial machines, a three- or six-month inspection is appropriate where use is heavy. Lower-use machines may suit annual servicing, provided daily and monthly checks are being completed properly.

At a professional service, the focus should include pump condition, oil changes where applicable, seals and valves, pressure regulation, safety devices, motor or engine servicing, hoses, electrical components and overall output. On hot-water machines, burner operation, fuel filtration, ignition components, combustion settings and coil condition all need specialist attention.

Descaling is particularly important for hot-water machines in hard-water areas. Scale acts as insulation inside the coil, so the burner uses more fuel to deliver less heat. Left long enough, it can lead to overheating and coil failure. The exact interval depends on water hardness, running hours and whether a suitable scale inhibitor is used. This is one area where guessing can be costly.

Petrol and diesel engines also need servicing to their own schedule, including oil, air filters, fuel filters and spark plugs on petrol models. A pressure washer may appear to be a pump and hose, but the engine is equally work-critical. Restricting airflow with a dirty filter or neglecting engine oil will shorten its life quickly.

When to stop using the machine

Do not continue working just because the washer still produces some pressure. Stop and investigate if the pump is noisy, pressure pulses heavily, oil turns milky, water leaks from the pump, an electric machine trips repeatedly, or a burner smokes, smells strongly of fuel or locks out.

The trade-off is simple. Losing an hour to inspection may feel inconvenient; losing a day, a customer booking and a pump assembly is worse. Continuing to use a faulty machine often turns a serviceable repair into a major one.

Keep a basic maintenance record with dates, hours, faults found, parts fitted and servicing completed. It helps operators spot recurring problems, supports fleet planning and gives an engineer useful history when a fault does occur. For high-value commercial equipment, a planned servicing arrangement also makes budgeting easier and reduces the risk of surprise breakdowns.
