There is no single ratio that suits every vehicle, every season or every cleaning setup. Product concentration, water hardness, dwell time, application method and the level of soil all matter. Start with the chemical label, then adjust with a clear reason - not guesswork at the wash bay.
What traffic film remover dilution actually does
Traffic film remover, usually called TFR, is an alkaline detergent formulated to break down the oily, static road film that builds up on commercial vehicles, plant, vans and fleet cars. Its job is to loosen contamination so it can be rinsed away under pressure. It is not simply a stronger shampoo.
Dilution determines how much active cleaning chemical reaches the surface. Too weak, and the product may appear to do nothing. Operators often respond by applying more, scrubbing harder or making repeated passes, which costs time and water. Too strong, and you increase chemical spend while raising the risk of dulling trim, staining bare aluminium, affecting polished metal or damaging already tired paintwork.
The best working strength is the lowest one that consistently removes the soil in a single, controlled wash. That is where cleaning becomes predictable and profitable.
Start with the product label, not a universal ratio
A common mistake is searching for one definitive TFR ratio. A 1:100 recommendation on one product may not clean the same as 1:100 on another. Concentrated formulations differ significantly in alkaline strength, surfactants and additives. Always follow the manufacturer’s stated dilution range and safety information first.
As a practical starting point, light maintenance washing may call for a weaker solution, while heavily soiled haulage vehicles, agricultural machinery or winter fleet work may need a stronger mix within the approved range. If the vehicle is cleaned regularly, stronger is rarely better. Regular washing stops grime becoming baked on, meaning a lighter dilution can do the job with less risk and lower cost.
Water quality also has a bearing. Hard water can reduce detergent performance and leave mineral spotting, particularly if the vehicle dries before rinsing. If your results vary from site to site, do not immediately blame the TFR. Check the water supply, machine performance and the application equipment as well.
Understand the difference between pre-mix and final dilution
This is where plenty of otherwise capable operators get caught out. The chemical ratio in a sprayer, foam lance or detergent tank is not always the final ratio reaching the vehicle.
With a pump-up sprayer, the mix in the bottle is generally the mix applied, subject to normal overspray and runoff. If you add 100 ml of TFR to 10 litres of water, that is approximately a 1:100 dilution.
With a pressure washer chemical injector, venturi system or detergent control, the machine may dilute the chemical again as it draws it through. A product placed neat in a detergent container may therefore be arriving at the panel at a much weaker final concentration. The exact result depends on the injector and machine settings.
For this reason, a good ratio on paper can disappoint in use. Check whether your chosen setup requires a pre-diluted solution or neat chemical feed. If you are unsure, test the output in a measuring jug or ask a specialist before committing to a working process. It prevents wasted product and avoids sending operators out with a mix that is far too weak.
How to set your traffic film remover dilution on site
Use a clean, clearly marked container and measure rather than pouring by eye. A simple measuring jug makes it possible to repeat the same result across shifts, vehicles and sites. Record the product, dilution, weather conditions and cleaning result during initial trials. It takes minutes and gives you a dependable benchmark for future work.
Begin at the weaker end of the manufacturer’s recommended range on a cool, wet vehicle. Apply the TFR from the bottom upwards. This helps prevent streaking and gives the detergent even coverage on the dirtiest lower areas, including wheel arches, sideskirts and rear doors.
Allow a short dwell time so the chemical can work, but never let it dry. On a mild, overcast day you may have more working time. In direct sun, warm weather or on hot panels, work in smaller sections and rinse sooner. Dwell time is productive; dried chemical is a problem.
Rinse thoroughly from the top down using an appropriate fan jet and sensible working distance. Poor rinsing leaves loosened dirt and detergent behind, which can look like streaking once the bodywork dries. If grime remains in isolated areas, assess whether the soil needs agitation, a dedicated wheel cleaner or a second targeted application before making every wash unnecessarily stronger.
Match the dilution to the vehicle and contamination
A lightly soiled company van on a weekly wash schedule is not the same job as a tipper returning from a winter route. Nor is a polished aluminium tanker the same as a painted fleet body. The chemical choice and strength must reflect the surface as well as the dirt.
For routine fleet cleaning, a milder approved dilution with good coverage and dwell time is usually the efficient choice. On heavy road film, strengthen the mix gradually within the label guidance and test a small, inconspicuous area first. Do not make a dramatic jump because one panel has a stubborn patch.
Agricultural and construction equipment may carry mud, grease and organic contamination as well as traffic film. Remove heavy mud first with a rinse or suitable low-pressure wash. TFR performs better when it is not being asked to dissolve a thick layer of soil that should have been physically removed.
Sensitive materials need extra care. Bare aluminium, anodised surfaces, polished metal, damaged paint, decals and older trim can react differently to alkaline cleaners. Apply conservatively, keep dwell time short and rinse completely. If there is any doubt, test first. A faster wash is not a saving if it creates a costly rectification job.
The mistakes that waste TFR and labour
Most poor results come from process rather than product. Applying detergent to a hot, dry vehicle is a regular cause of staining and uneven cleaning. So is leaving the mix to dry while the operator starts another vehicle.
Over-concentrating is equally common. A stronger solution may create more foam or smell more aggressive, but neither is proof of better cleaning. It can also leave operators relying on chemical strength instead of checking nozzle condition, water flow and pressure. A worn jet, blocked filter or poor injector setting can make a perfectly good chemical look ineffective.
Do not use TFR as a substitute for every specialist cleaner. It may be ideal for painted bodywork and road film, but wheels with baked-on brake dust, heavily greased components or mineral staining often need a different product and method. Using the right chemical for the contamination reduces both contact time and the temptation to over-strengthen your TFR.
Finally, avoid mixing products unless the manufacturer specifically confirms compatibility. Chemicals can react, lose effectiveness or create unnecessary handling risks. Keep containers labelled, use appropriate PPE, and follow the safety data supplied with the product.
Build a repeatable wash process
For commercial cleaning teams, consistency matters as much as cleaning power. Set an approved working dilution for routine jobs, a separate stronger option for specified heavy contamination, and clear instructions for sensitive finishes. Train staff to recognise when a vehicle needs a different approach rather than simply turning up the chemical.
