A good mobile pressure washing setup does three things well. It delivers enough pressure and flow for the job, it carries water and equipment safely, and it keeps the operator productive through a full working day.
Too many buyers focus on pressure alone. In real use, flow rate often matters just as much, and sometimes more. A machine with decent litres per minute will rinse faster, carry dirt away better and make larger surface cleaning jobs far less painful. If you are cleaning vehicles, yards or agricultural kit all day, chasing high bar figures while ignoring water flow can leave you with a setup that looks strong on paper but feels slow in the field.
The second part is layout. A machine, tank, hose reel, chemical system and storage all need to work together inside the vehicle or trailer. If access is poor, refilling is awkward or the weight is badly distributed, you lose time and create risks. The best systems are not the ones with the most components. They are the ones where every part has a clear purpose.
Start with the job, not the machine
Before choosing engine size, boiler output or tank capacity, look at the actual work. A mobile valeter has very different needs from a contractor washing down construction equipment. Likewise, someone working on domestic driveways will not build the same system as a transport operator cleaning large fleets.
Cold water pressure washers suit plenty of work. Vehicle exteriors, patios, machinery, cladding and general washdown can all be handled very effectively with the right cold water machine, especially when paired with the correct nozzle, lance and chemicals. They are usually simpler, lighter and cheaper to maintain than hot water units.
Hot water starts to make more sense when grease, oil, heavy traffic film or food-related contamination are common. A hot wash trailer may be ideal for some commercial operators, while a van-based cold water setup is the smarter option for others.
Van, trailer or skid-mounted?
This is where many buying decisions are won or lost.
A van-based system gives you security, weather protection and a tidy working space. It suits mobile valeting, contract cleaning and service businesses that want a professional appearance and quick access to tools. The downside is payload. Once you add a machine, water tank, hose reels, fuel, chemicals and operator kit, smaller vans can run out of legal carrying capacity very quickly.
Trailers offer more space and often more flexibility. They suit higher water volumes, larger machines and jobs where you need serious output for longer periods. They are also useful if you want to keep your main vehicle free or swap the trailer between towing vehicles. The trade-off is manoeuvrability, security and storage when not in use.
Skid-mounted systems can work well for pickups and flatbeds, especially in agricultural and industrial environments. They are straightforward and accessible, but they need proper fixing points and sensible weather protection.
Water tanks and supply: where many setups go wrong
A pressure washer is only as good as its water supply. If your machine is starved of water, performance drops and pump damage becomes a real risk.
Tank size should be based on genuine working time, not guesswork. A small buffer tank may be enough if you usually work on sites with a reliable mains feed. If you clean in remote areas, on farms or in car parks with no easy supply, you will need much more onboard water. Just remember that water is heavy. Roughly speaking, 500 litres means around 500kg before you count the tank itself and the rest of the equipment.
This is why vehicle choice and payload calculations matter so much. An oversized tank in the wrong van is not a clever setup. It is a legal and safety problem.
Baffled tanks are normally the right choice for mobile work because they reduce water movement in transit. Proper mounting is equally important. Straps alone are not enough if the base and fixing points are poor. Water tanks need to be secured as part of a complete system, not treated as an afterthought.
Power source and machine choice
Your machine needs to suit both the job and the platform it sits on.
Petrol engine pressure washers are common on mobile systems because they are independent and practical. They work well where no mains electricity is available and they are often a sensible match for van packs and trailers. Diesel can also be a strong option on larger commercial builds, particularly where durability and longer run times are priorities.
Full electric setups are increasingly relevant, especially for indoor use, emissions-sensitive sites and operators looking at future restrictions. They can be excellent, but only when the power supply is properly thought through. Battery-backed and generator-supported systems need careful specification. A poor electrical plan can create as many problems as a poor water supply.
The machine itself should be chosen around duty cycle, serviceability and pump quality. In commercial work, reliability matters more than headline specs. A slightly less aggressive machine built with better components and lower service costs will often make more money over time than a cheaper unit that spends too long off the road.
Layout, reels and access
A professional mobile pressure washing setup is easier to use because the layout has been thought through. Hose reels should be positioned so you can deploy and rewind without climbing over equipment. Fuel fillers, tank outlets and service points need to be accessible. If routine checks become awkward, they tend to get skipped.
Weight distribution is another practical issue. Keep heavier items low and balanced. Avoid loading everything on one side of the van or trailer. Not only does that affect handling, it can also put unnecessary stress on floors, fixings and suspension.
Think about drainage and spill control too. Wet environments are part of the job, but standing water inside a vehicle leads to corrosion, smells and damaged kit. Floor protection, bunded chemical storage and sensible separation between clean equipment and chemical products all make a difference.
Chemicals, accessories and the jobs you actually do
The washer is only part of the system. A mobile operator usually needs hoses, lances, nozzles, foam equipment, surface cleaners and chemical application tools that match the work.
If you clean vehicles, you may need separate stages for pre-wash, snow foam, rinse and wheel work. If you clean yards or forecourts, a flat surface cleaner can massively improve speed and consistency. If you work in food environments or heavy industrial areas, chemical resistance and washdown control become more important.

A cheap build can look attractive until a hose reel tears loose, the tank shifts under braking or the machine becomes a nuisance to repair. Experienced buyers usually learn this once. After that, they start valuing correct specification, proper installation and real backup.
