Petrol and electric pressure washers both clean brilliantly when matched to the right job — and both disappoint when they are not. Here is a clear, no-nonsense comparison to help you choose.

Electric machines have fewer moving parts, no engine oil to change, no spark plugs and no fuel to buy or store. Maintenance is minimal and running costs are typically lower.

Petrol engines need more looking after — oil changes, air filters, spark plugs and fuel management. That maintenance is the trade-off for true portability, and for off-grid users it is well worth it. Just budget for it rather than being surprised by it.

Noise and environment

Electric runs much quieter, which matters enormously for indoor work, residential areas, food premises and anywhere noise complaints are a risk. There are also no exhaust emissions, so electric is the only safe choice in enclosed spaces.

Petrol is louder and produces exhaust fumes, so it must only be used outdoors or in very well-ventilated areas. For open sites this is rarely an issue, but it rules petrol out for indoor cleaning entirely.

Ask yourself one question: will you always have access to mains power?

  • Yes, almost always — go electric. You will enjoy lower running costs, quieter operation and less maintenance.
